Week Two Rutherford County high school picks

Week One is in the books, but it wasn’t overly profitable for Rutherford County as the teams went a combined 2-8.

However, it should be noted that the schedule was more than difficult the first week of the season.

Oakland and La Vergne were the lone winners, but hopefully things will improve this week.

Oakland, which rolled all over Hendersonville 42-10, is off this week due to Kenwood (Montgomery County) not being able to start its season until next week. Stewarts Creek also has an open date.

Here are the Week Two picks:

Blackman at Ravenwood: The Blaze are taking on all comers early in the season as they’re coming off a loss at Alcoa and now face a team that is certainly one of the favorites to make the BlueCross Bowl. Tough competition will make the Blaze better, but it’s another tough road test. Pick: Ravenwood 34, Blackman 17.

Green Hill at La Vergne: Green Hill is a first-year program, so they’re obviously an unknown at this point and didn’t play last week. La Vergne opened the season with a solid 49-35 victory over Rockvale last week and should improve this week. Pick: La Vergne 30, Green Hill 20.

Franklin at Riverdale: The Warriors are coming off a turnover-plagued 20-7 loss at home to CPA. However, Riverdale played excellent defense and should get better on the offensive side of the ball. Franklin is coming off a 42-16 win over Siegel. This should be a great battle between the Admirals offensive line and the Warriors defensive line. Pick: Riverdale 28, Franklin 27.

Centennial at Smyrna: The Bulldogs took a big loss at home to Pope John Paul II in Week One. Centennial won’t be near the opponent, but nevertheless should be tough to handle. Pick: Centennial 31, Smyrna 21.

Page at Siegel: The Stars showed some positive signs on offense last week at Franklin, rushing for almost 200 yards. However, they must cut down on the turnovers and do a better job stopping the run. Pick: Siegel 21, Page 19.

Rockvale at Franklin County: This is a winnable game for Rockvale, but they have to make strides defensively. Pick: Franklin County 35, Rockvale 32.

Friendship Christian at MTCS: Friendship Christian will keep a stranglehold on the region until someone can prove otherwise. The Cougars played a solid game in a 23-20 loss at White House Heritage last week and should be a playoff team regardless of this week’s outcome. Pick: Friendship Christian 35, MTCS 14.

Eagleville at Cornersville: This should be an entertaining game for those in attendance as both teams showed Week One they can put up points. It’s a tough road test for the Eagles. Pick: Cornersville 38, Eagleville 34.

Last week: 8-1
