Week 3 Rutherford County high school football picks

It was a tough night for Rutherford County high school football teams as the post just a 4-5 combined record.

Blackman, MTCS, Stewarts Creek and Smyrna were the lone winners with Stewarts Creek notching its first district win of the season at Antioch.

Here are the picks:

Blackman at Coffee County: As it looks right now, the Blaze look to be the only district team that will seriously challenge Oakland, which suffered a tough 24-21 loss at Maryville. Blackman will be back on the road for the third straight week and won’t play at home until Week 5. It doesn’t matter where this is played. Pick: Blackman 55, Coffee County 6.

Riverdale at Siegel: It’s the district opener for both teams who are off to 0-2 starts. Siegel showed more signs of life last week, falling by just four points at home to Ravenwood. Riverdale, meanwhile, labored offensive and managed just one touchdown in a 17-point loss to Franklin. Pick: Siegel 21, Riverdale 20.

Cane Ridge at La Vergne: The Wolverines are off to a 0-2 start and it hardly gets easier this week when they open district play against a team that knocked off Brentwood last week. La Vergne is the midst of growing pains, and more figure to follow on Friday. Pick: Cane Ridge 42, La Vergne 14.

CPA at Smyrna: The Bulldogs have outscored their first two opponents 89-7, but this will certainly be the strongest foe they’ve faced to date. It was a mismatch last year, but Smyrna is a much better team that should make it close. Pick: CPA 24, Smyrna 21.

Stewarts Creek at John Overton: The Red Hawks, who are to a surprising 2-0 start, have outscored their first two opponents 45-7 after last week’s district opener at Antioch. Another win this week would put Stewarts Creek in a nice position to make a run at the playoffs. Pick: Stewarts Creek 28, John Overton 24.

Eagleville at Forrest: The Eagles were stunned and overwhelmed in a 41-0 road loss at defending Class A runner-up Cornersville last week. Meanwhile, Forrest rolled to a 51-point win over Fayetteville. This a great Class AA rivalry and the district opener for both. Expect a tough and physical game. Pick: Eagleville 17, Forrest 14.

MTCS at The Kings Academy: MTCS has allowed just 10 points in its first two games, but the competition will be much stiffer this week in the Cougars district opener. Pick: MTCS 22, The Kings Academy 20.

Oakland (OPEN)

Last week: 7-2; Season: 12-4
