MCMINNVILLE -- Brenden Hayes and Lamarcus Nelson both went over 100 yards rushing but it was not good enough as Rockvale couldn't overcome three turnovers in a 36-35 gut wrenching loss at Warren County Friday night.
Hayes had 18 carries for 125 yards and one score and Nelson added 14 totes for 114 yards and four scores.
Warren County, however, scored late to cut it to one, and then after a timeou,t decided to go for the win with the 2-point conversion as Xander Lee ran the ball up the middle for the deciding points with 94 seconds remaining.
"It will be hard for our coaching staff to get our kids back up," Rockvale coach Rick Rice said. "This is a tough one for us but you can not give up the big pass play."
On the final drive, the Pioneers converted a third-and-14 with a 32-yard reception from Lacedrick Cox to Kason Holder. It set up the game-winning score, 3-yard score from Jaterrius Rozier.
After a fumble by the Rockets and a punt by the Pioneers both teams scored -- Rockvale on a 3-yard ard run by Nelson and Cox with a 33-yard run for the Pioneers to tie score at 7-7 in the first quarter.
Nelson scored again after a 12 play, 68-yard drive, capped by a 4-yard run from Nelson, who scored again in the second quarter his third one of the half as Rockvale went up 20-7 with six minutes left before the half
Warren County scored once more before intermissions C. Taylor ran one in from 10 yards out. On the extra point the snap was high but the holder found Lee for a 2-point conversion to make the score 20-15 at halftime.
The Pioneers came out of the locker room and drove 10 plays and 73 yards, running over four and a half minutes off the clock and taking the lead 21-20.
Rockvale came right back going on a nine play 72-yard drive, capped by another score from Nelson and it was 28-21 Rockets.
Warren County tied it on a 29 yard run by Cox, making it even at 28. Rockvale then went on a 10-play, 80-yard drive to make it 35-35.
Rockvale plays host to Clarksville next Friday.
