SMYRNA-- Siegel Middle's soccer team took the Rutherford County title by defeating the Blackman Flames 3-1 at Rocky Fork Middle School on Thursday.
Siegel held possession most of the match and had several chances to score. Campbell Harris put in the first of two goals in the first half to give the Cavaliers a 1-0 lead.
"Harris is a leader for us on and off the field," Siegel coach Culley Phillips said. "She should have those goals the offense runs through her and we are fortunate that it does."
Later on in the first half, a corner kick set Siegel up for its second goal as Lanie Martinez put a ball into the box and it went off of the leg of Elizabeth Bush into the net and a 2-0 lead at intermission.
The second half was about possession as both teams played mostly in the midfield. Both teams had chances. One of the Flames shots went over the goal as they tried cut into the deficit.
Late in the second half, Blackman's Brylee Durham took a shot from around 18 yards out. It went off the Siegel goalkeeper but barely snuck into the goal to make the score 3-1
"I am proud of my players," Blackman coach Brianna Jasenak said. "Sometimes the scoreboard does not tell you how hard you have worked. We battled until the end and put that one in, but I am super proud of them."
