Riverdale's baseball team put on a clinic in the batter's box Wednesday night in a 10-1 victory over Smyrna.
The Warriors led 9-1 following an eight-run fourth inning. Seven base hits in the inning, including three consecutive to lead off the inning, followed by Peyton Fogle capping it off with a two-RBI single.
Riverdale completed the sweep on Thursday night and improved to 8-1 in District 7-AAA play with a 9-1 over the Bulldogs on Thursday night.
“(Last district series versus Siegel) we were very passive at the plate and we preached to our guys to be aggressive,” Riverdale coach Barry Messer said.
Johnny Powers doubled in two more runs amidst the fourth inning rally. Blake Merwin and Paxton Hughes singled in a run apiece with two outs to open up a 7-1 lead. Brantley Bamberg doubled in a pair of runs to cap off the eight run inning.
“They bought in to what we are coaching them and they are seeing the results,” Messer said. “A lot of our runs (in the fourth) came with two outs and it shows our guys abilities to play loose and get timely hits.”
Powers singled in the third inning to give Riverdale an early 1-0 lead and tallied onto his three-RBI night.
“We really stuck to our approach and hit fastballs when we got them,” Powers said. “Our pitchers have done a great job keeping us in the game, our offense is starting to get going and keep on moving.”
Riverdale’s run production followed up an 8-0 road win at Smyrna Tuesday night. Joey Mitchell pitched six innings, scattering four hits with nine strikeouts.
“(Mitchell) is doing a really good job of just attacking the zone,” said Messer of his 4-0 ace. “He works fast and speeds hitters up.”
