Stewarts Creek running Gabe Walker scored from seven yards out in the second overtime Friday night for a thrilling 35-28 non-region victory at Wilson Central.
Wilson Central forced the overtime with 17 seconds remaining in the game when Hayden Smith scored on a 1-yard run.
The Wildcats scored first in overtime on Robbie Spickard’s 10-yard run that made it 28-21 after Esteban Hurtado’s PAT.
Walker, however, answered again on a 4-yard run, and after the PAT, it was tied at 28-28.
Walker, who had four touchdown runs, scored from seven yards out for the game-winner that improved the Red Hawks to 5-2.
“It was kind of wild,” Stewarts Creek coach Ben Caudill said. “I had a bunch of players asking what the overtime rules were. I guess I should have covered it, but it was a great night.
“It’s tough on the road, and I was really, really proud of how persevered through some things. I was really proud of how our defense made a big play there late.”
The senior finished the night with 174 and averaged almost eight yards a carry. Pickard led the Wildcats with 77 yards, and Blake Hobbs gained 55.
Stewarts Creek quarterback Nathan Hampton completed 10 of 14 passed for 115 yards and a touchdown.
Hayden Shults was 11 for 18 for 140 yards and a TD. Wilson Central amassed 347 yards in total offense to Stewarts Creek’s 268. Both teams had two turnovers.
Walker scored his first touchdown with 10:17 left in the second quarter to give Stewarts Creek a 7-0 advantage, and Hampton threw a 45-yard touchdown to Javarian Otey with 1:36 left before intermission.
However, Shults found Alex Atwell from 25 yards out with 11 seconds left to cut the lead to 14-7 at the half.
Wilson Central scored late in the fourth on a Spickard 46-yard run, but the 2-point conversion failed. The Wildcats then tied the game at 21-21 with 17 seconds remaining in regulation when Shults scored from a yard out and Blake Hobbs ran in it for the 2-point conversion.
