Playing for the first time since Week 1, Stewarts Creek finally returned to the field and notched its first win of the season with a 30-20 victory at Franklin on Friday night.

The Red Hawks missed the previous two games against East Nashville and Oakland due to COVID-19 issues within the program.

“We had to dig deep at times,” Stewarts Creek coach Ben Caudill said. “We really haven’t gone on the road since I’ve been here at Stewarts Creek and beat a quality team. I’m proud of our guys only being able to practice twice in the past two weeks.”

Stewarts Creek senior tailback Gabe Walker had a big night, rushing for more than 200 yards and four touchdowns. Receiver Tayden Mounivong had more than 80 yards receiving.

Coming off back-to-back heartbreakers, the Cougars made sure it wasn’t close on Friday night.

MTCS, which earned its first victory, scored first on a 35-yard pass from Aden Hooper to Gabe Howell to take an early 8-7 lead, The Cougars led 29-14 at the half before Mt. Juliet Christian pulled within 29-21 in the third quarter.

However, MTCS scored 14 unanswered points to go up 43-21 en route to the big win.

“We finally got one. They battled. The message has been keep working and it paid off,” MTCS coach Kolby Tackett. “I think offensively, I like where we’re at. The kids are finally clicking and understanding where to go and how it works. It was good to see it all come together.”

Eli Wilson had another huge game for the Cougars, rushing for more than 200 yards. He scored four touchdowns, including one on a pick-6 that covered 100 yards and another via the air from Hooper.

Gordonsville 28, Eagleville 14

The Eagles (2-2) led 14-7 at halftime but were shut out in the second half by host Gordonsville.

“We liked where we were coming out of halftime,” Eagleville coach Floyd Walker said. “We thought we could do some things but it didn’t go the way we planned. I can’t complain about the effort, but we’ve got to clean up some things that happened it that game.”

Eagleville senior quarterback Marcus Collins threw for 158 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 23 yards but left with a shoulder injury. Dylan Pratt had five tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery.

Oakland game cancelled

No. 1 ranked Oakland’s football team was unexpectedly off for the second straight week last Friday night.

The Patriots’ scheduled game against Beacon Hill (Va.) was cancelled because the home school team backed out on Thursday.

Beacon Hill plays all of its games out of state and has been outscored 113-0 in its first two games, which could be the reason it decided not to make the trip to Murfreesboro.

Oakland has won two of the last three TSSAA Class 6A state titles and is 2-0 with wins at Hendersonville (42-7) and at back-to-back Mississippi Class 6A state champion Madison Ridgeland Academy (31-13).

The Patriots were scheduled to play their first district game the previous week against Stewarts Creek, but it was cancelled due to COVID-issues within the Red Hawks program.
