Siegel volleyball sweeps Rockvale to stay unbeaten in district

Siegel’s volley ball team’s serving propelled the Stars to a 3-0 win over Rockvale 3-0 (25-11, 25-11, 25-15) at Rockvale on Tuesday night.

Siegel improved to 18-3 overall and 7-0 in district play. Rockvale is 12-10 and 3-4 in district play. The league is looking to postseason as the district tourney will be at Stewarts Creek October 5-6.

The first game began with ties from one to three. Siegel grabbed an 8-4 lead and continued to lead throughout the first set.

Rockvale cut the lead to 14-10, but Emily Wessner served nine straight points to get the lead to 23-10. A kill from Brooke Gilleland closed out the set for the Stars.

“It helps out a lot. We get on a roll and we are really confident,” Siegel senior Emily Wessner said. “It makes the game better when you can get points over and over and it makes it more enjoyable,”

The second set of the match began with June Padilla serving nine straight points before Rockvale scored. A kill by Jaida Clark Siegel a commanding 12-1 lead.

A block by Clark made it 15-4, and Siegel’s biggest lead was 22-7. Rockvale cut it to 22-10 before Siegel closed it out again at 25-11.

“I’m proud of how Padilla has been an excellent server for us,” Siegel coach Trish Flower said. “It helps us execute our game plan. We have eight seniors and they show leadership and experience on the court. I am proud of the way they are playing together.

“We are grateful to be having a season, and we are putting egos on the backburner and playing as a team.”

The third set began with Siegel jumping out to a 7-2 lead.

From there, it was all Siegel as the Stars led late in the set 19-10. A kill from Gilleland made it 23-13, and the Stars got the final two points for the victory.

“We let our energy drop and we were inconsistent,” first-year Rockvale coach Cody Burton said. “We did some things good and some things not so good. We are a young program and we are building. I have a 6-3 girl that is going to play next year and a 5-11 girl from the middle school ranks.”
