Siegel's volleyball team was in survival mode Thursday, defeating Cookeville and Collierville in five sets before defeating Houston in four 25-11, 22-25, 25-23, 25-20 to the reach the TSSAA Class AAA title game against Brentwood.
It set up a showdown with seven-time defending state champ Brentwood on Friday at 4 p.m. at Siegel.
"Defeating them in the regular season gives us confidence and we have to want it more than Brentwood," Siegel senior Jaida Clark said. "We have to bring the energy and fight to them."
Clark had 20 kills and four blocks in the Houston match, and June Padilla had 40 digs and two aces. Freshman Cate Schroeder had 12 kills while Brooke Gilliland had 14 kills.
"It makes me smile every time I think about it. We are going to the state finals," Siegel senior setter and captain Laura Howell said. "It would be the ultimate thank you to win it for a school and a program that has given us so much."
The match with Houston started off well for the Stars. Three kills by Gilliland gave them a 13-5 lead and a kill by Clark made it 16-6 and they were on their way to a first set win of 25-11.
Houston played much better in the second half, however.
Siegel made several errors, leading to a 25-22 loss. The third set featured 10 ties and was tied from 19 to 23 before Siegel got the last two points of the set.
The fourth set had the Stars with early leads of 4-0, 9-6 and 10-8. An ace by Padilla serving made it 12-9 Siegel. A pair of kills by Clark extended their lead to 16-10 and it went more at 23-12.
Houston rallied but to no avail as Siegel took the set 25-20, setting up the match with Brentwood.
