SMYRNA — Riverdale's girls advanced to the District 7-AAA’s Championship after a 63-52 win over Stewarts Creek Saturday afternoon.
“Our girls came out and worried about themselves and did their job,” Riverdale coach Amy Josephson said. “We did our job when it came down to it, and proud of our second half
Riverdale led the entire game but a quick Stewarts Creek squad kept the regular season runner-up within reach for four quarters. Riverdale had its largest lead of 13 at the break after outscoring the Lady Red Hawks 15-7 in the second quarter.
“My teammates did a great job of getting me the ball, and we just have trust in each other,” Riverdale senior guard Alasia Hayes said of her 12-point first half.
Stewarts Creek's defense sped the game up in its favor as the Red Hawks cut into the Riverdale lead. Sister duo Zyion and Zhordan Shannon combined for big buckets in the second half to cut the Lady Warrior deficit down to six with three minutes left in the third.
“(Stewarts Creek) has great defense and they slowed our offense down in the third,” Josephson said. “We made the passes and hit the free throws when we needed them to.”
Zhordan and Zyion led an 8-0 run to pull within 50-47 with five minutes left. Fighting foul trouble, there was little Stewarts Creek could do to slow down Hayes as the senior scored 10 of the Lady Warriors final 13 points.
“It is my senior year and it’s my job to step up and make the big shots for my team when it matters,” Hayes said.
Hayes scored 31 points with 9 of 10 free-throw shooting and grabbed a team-high eight boards.
Zyion Shannon scored a team-high 15 points while Zhordan Shannon scored 14 with 11 rebounds.
Riverdale will face Oakland in the championship game on Monday at 7:30 at Stewarts Creek. Stewarts Creek faces Blackman in the consolation game at 6 p.m.
