Oakland overcame a slow start but had yet another stellar defensive performance in Friday night’s 34-0 home victory over Lebanon in the first round of the TSSAA state playoffs.

“This is a couple weeks now we have not played to our standards, but we always lean on our defense to make the big plays,” Patriots head Kevin Creasy said. “Luckily all our mistakes are correctable. We did not execute on offense or special teams like we need to, so we have to get better just like our competition is every week.

Oakland earned a rematch with Mount Juliet in the second of the playoffs. Oakland defeated the Golden Bears 14-7 in the 2018 quarterfinals.

Oakland scored on its opening and closing drives in the first half. Jordan Brown rushed for 40 yards on the first possession, capping the drive with a well earned 2-yard score.

Kody Sparks completed a 6-yard touchdown to DeArre McDonald. A fumbled snap on the PAT put Oakland ahead 13-0 at the break.

Lebanon maintained possession of the ball for the majority of the first 24 minutes and its defense allowed just 71 yards on the ground in the first half.

“We hung our hat on defense all year and they played to their abilities in the first half,” Lebanon coach Chuck Gentry said. “We just missed some tackles, and a good team like Oakland will make you pay.”

Blue Devil Linebacker Daniel Davila collected eight solo tackles, including two for a loss and a sack.

Lebanon carried their slow, methodical scheme into the second half with an impressive drive that came up empty.

Oakland flipped the script on offense, scoring three touchdowns on just 12 second-half plays. Sparks found McDonald again in space for a 23-yard touchdown.

Tim Pannell scored a 76-yard touchdown for a 27-0 lead before Antonio Patterson became the fourth Patriot to score from 4 yards away.
