Oakland Patriots shut down Siegel 36-7 and continued to look every bit the No. 1 football team in the state on a clear, fittingly starless night at Ken Nolan Stadium.

The Siegel student section was raucous, but neither noise nor the Stars’ defense could slow the Patriots, as Oakland scored touchdowns on its first three possessions. Oakland has a plethora of playmakers at the skill positions, and it was evident from its opening drive, with the first four snaps going to four different players.

“We weren’t sure what we were really going to get defensively (from Siegel),” Oakland coach Kevin Creasy said. “But we have different weapons we need to try to get the ball to.”

Two of those weapons had big nights. Junior running back Jordan James, a transfer from Brentwood Academy, ran for 102 yards and had touchdowns from 12 and 33 yards. James’ 12-yard scamper was Oakland’s first score of the night and it was set up thanks in large part to junior running back/defensive back Antonio Patterson picking up 42 yards on his first two touches.

Oakland’s other weapon was wide receiver Isaiah Horton, a transfer from Ensworth, and he caught three passes for 117 yards, including the play of the night — a 95-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Ian Schlater.

Horton’s touchdown put Oakland up 15-0 and it was a back-breaking play for Siegel. The Stars had an opportunity to potentially tie the game in the first quarter after sophomore running back Cory Sims broke free for a 46-yard run and got Siegel inside Oakland’s 10 yard line. Sims couldn’t power the ball into the end zone, and the Patriot defense stood tall on a fourth and goal keeper by Siegel quarterback Jack Nedrow.

“Honestly it was a bad call by me,” Siegel coach Adam Renshaw said. “We should have pounded it back up in there again. We had a big back and probably could have done it and I wish I had called it the other way.”

Games like Friday night’s loss to Oakland are important for Renshaw and his football program. The Patriots are the barometer to which all other football teams measure themselves, and Renshaw could take away some positives from Friday’s loss while keeping his eyes on the future.

“Oakland’s a really good program, and we’re in the midst of trying to get our program to be a really good program,” Renshaw said. “One of the things we talked about all week was ‘come out and compete, and give ourselves a shot to get better.’ I was really proud of our kids, they did that.”
