McGavock upsets LaVergne for first victory

LAVERGNE—McGavock notched its first win of the season with a 28-21 victory over LaVergne on Friday night.

McGavock (1-7, 1-3) came out swinging with running back Michael Bryant in the wildcat with two rushing touchdowns, and the Raiders’ defense scored on a fumble recovery, as well.

“We just had to let [LaVergne] know that [McGavock’s] here. We’re 0-7, but we play like a 7-0 team. We’re going to fight and never stop fighting,” Bryant said.

LaVergne did not go away quietly as it battled back to tie the game at 21-21, but it was the Raiders’ night.

“When you’re losing, everything seems to be worse, so winning is pretty nice. It gives the kids a chance to feel good about winning,” said McGavock head coach Jay Gore.

It hasn’t been pretty for the Raiders of McGavock, but Gore was happy is team was able to fight through the ebbs and flows of the game to come out on top.

“We went into the game knowing that we had a chance,” Gore said. “We had a lot of big plays by kids who did some things wrong but had the chance to redeem themselves.”

LaVergne quarterback Lavandre Webb threw for two touchdowns but also committed two of the Wolverines’ five turnovers – including a game-ending interception on fourth-and-goal that would’ve given LaVergne the opportunity to tie the game at 28-28 with less than two minutes left.

Wolverines’ head coach Stanton Stevens said his team’s mistakes cost them an important win.

“[McGavock] scored off three of our turnovers; that’s 21 points right there,” he said. “One turnover was a 14-point swing, because we were going into the end zone to score. It’s simple as the turnover battle. You lose the turnover battle most cases you end up losing the game.”

This was a crucial loss for the Wolverines as a win would’ve kept them in the race of district championship with two games left. Now they must win one of their next two games to secure a playoff spot.

“A couple games left, and we still can control our destiny of the playoffs,” Stevens said. “We win, we’re in. We lose, we’re out, so we have to come back ready to play and get our minds back right.”

The win also keeps McGavock in the playoff hunt for fourth place in the district with Antioch (0-8, 0-5) on the road Friday night and against Overton (1-7, 1-3) at home to close out the regular season.
