Eagleville holds on to knock off Summertown 13-7

EAGLEVILLE — Summertown attempted a late comeback against Eagleville on Friday night, but the Eagles held on for a 13-7 victory to improve to 6-2 overall and 2-2 in region play.

Eagleville played without starting quarterback Marcus Collins and called upon All-State safety Trevor Griffin to be the signal caller.

“I am proud of the way our kids handled this situation,” Eagleville coach Floyd Walker. “(Griffin) played every snap tonight and we needed that contribution for us to win tonight. Every guy played for one another and it is fun to watch these guys play together and contribute to a team win.”

Griffin flashed his play making abilities with two passes to Payton Lane of 41 and 15 yards, respectively, with the latter being a touchdown. The senior passed for 144 yards on 12 completions, including four completions to Lane for 96 yards.

“(Griffin) is a crazy athlete who handled a tough situation and made the most of it,” Lane said. “This is my second year playing with him and we have a great connection where we trust each other.”

Holding a 7-0 lead after the break, Walker made it an emphasis to control the clock with the run game. Griffin headed an eight-minute, 80-yard drive that ended on a 3-yard touchdown run by the QB. Griffin totaled 103 rushing yards on 18 carries.

“With a new QB we needed to take the pressure off the pass game and we were able to move the ball efficiently to open the half,” Walker said. “Our line was a big part of our success on both sides of the ball. It is fun to watch the big cats fly around like they did tonight.”

Eagleville’s defense stymied a Summertown offense that struggled to total 165 yards. Linebacker Wyatt McLemore’s return from injury was welcomed with an eight-tackle (three for losses) night. Lane produced on the defensive side with five tackles and a sack. Damien Stingley and Ethan Strickland tallied a sack apiece.

“(Defensive coaches Kent Pippenger and Billy Spann) put together a great plan for us tonight, and the defense as a whole executed great tonight,” Lane said.

Eagleville plays a non-region road game against Mt. Pleasant next Friday.
