Riverdale dropped a sloppy season opener at home Friday night, falling to 20-7 to 2019 Division II state runner-up CPA.
The teams combined for a dozen fumbles and the teams lost five of them. Also, Riverdale quarterback Jameson Holcomb threw two interceptions, setting up one Lions score as they led 14-0 at halftime.
“It is the worst we have played offensively since I have been here in 2009.” Warriors coach Will Kriesky said. “I have to do a better job as a coach to correct our mistakes and that is on me. In a 10-game season, you can not get too high or too low, and we have to come back and fight.”
Added CPA coach Ingle Martin: “We are grateful to come here and play a historic program on a historic field. Coach Kriesky is a great coach.”
The first score came on a snap over Holcomb’s head as the Warriors were inside their own 10-yard line. It rolled back into the end zone and Preston Slover recovered it for a 7-0 lead.
“I should have fallen on the ball,” Holcomb said. “You can not commit five turnovers and expect to win the ball game. We shot ourselves in the foot and nailed ourselves in the back.”
In the fourth quarter, Riverdale had a scoring drive, and the key play was a pass from Holcomb to Caleb Herring for 55 yards. Brandon Connard finished it off and it was 14-7 early in the final quarter.
CPA, however, drove down the field and converted a big 21-yard pass
play from Cade Law to Cade Reynolds. Law capped it with a 4-yard run as the Lions took the non-region win.
“We are a gritty team and we can win in any situation we are put in,” CPA’s Law said. “The weather had something to do with the turnovers, but give Riverdale credit. They played a great game.”
