The Main Street Preps staff has selected its 2020 All-Midstate high school football team.
See below for superlative honors and the first and second teams:
Player of the Year: C.J. Taylor, Warren County, Sr.
Stats: 212 carries, 1,764 rushing yards, 23 TD; 492 passing yards, 3 TD; 57 tackles, 4 TFL, 3 INT, 2 sacks, 5 PD, 2 FR; 207 return yards
Taylor did a little bit of everything for Warren County, leading the Pioneers (8-3) to their first winning record in 30 years. The quarterback and defensive back also earned the program’s first-ever Mr. Football award earlier this month. Taylor committed to Vanderbilt as a safety on Nov. 23 and plans to sign in February.
Offensive Player of the Year: Destin Wade, Summit, Jr.
Stats: 81-of-129 passing, 1,390 yards, 19 TD, 5 INT; 165 carries, 1,509 yards, 18 TD
The dual-threat Wade made significant strides as a passer to help the Spartans claim their first state title. Despite four opponents canceling for COVID-19 issues, Wade amassed nearly 3,000 yards of total offense and 37 touchdowns in 11 games. The junior holds more than a dozen FBS offers, including Ole Miss, Penn State and Tennessee.
Defensive Player of the Year: Langston Patterson, CPA, Jr.
Stats: 72 tackles (53 solo), 19 TFL, 3.5 sacks, 3 PD, 1 INT
Patterson was the key piece on a CPA defense that allowed just under 16 points per game. Nearly one-third of his total tackles came behind the line of scrimmage. When the linebacker wasn’t disrupting opposing backfields, he was rushing for 733 yards and 13 scores on offense. Schools like Nebraska, Notre Dame, Tennessee and Vanderbilt have already extended scholarship offers to Patterson.
Two-Way Player of the Year: Brent Rowe, Hendersonville, Sr.
Stats: 181 carries, 1,176 yards, 17 TD; 44 tackles, 5 TFL, 7 PBU, 2 INT, 2 FF, 1 FR
Rowe was a force on both sides of the ball for the Commandos. His hard-nosed running style provided 17 touchdowns for the offense, while his ability to cover ground at linebacker resulted in big plays behind the line of scrimmage and in the secondary. The 6-foot, 230-pounder is weighing offers from several small colleges, including Campbellsville, Maryville and Lindsey Wilson.
Specialist of the Year: Teagen Lenderink, Brentwood Academy, Sr.
Stats: 20-of-28 on FGs, 54-yard long; 32-of-32 on XPs; 59.8-yard average on kickoffs
Lenderink moved to Middle Tennessee this summer when it appeared high school football wouldn’t be played in his home state of Michigan. The senior made the most of his opportunity at Brentwood Academy and earned Tennessee Titans Mr. Football Kicker of the Year honors. Lenderink has offers from several FCS schools as well as preferred walk-on invitations from North Carolina and Wisconsin.
Coach of the Year: Kevin Creasy, Oakland
Resume: 15-0 record, Region 3-6A title, Class 6A state title
Hardly any team could catch the Patriots in 2020. Warren County came within 16 points (36-20) on Oct. 30, but otherwise, Oakland was unstoppable. Creasy deserves credit for guiding his team to a perfect season under less-than-ideal circumstances amid the pandemic.
