Oakland Middle School’s football team won a tight 21-14 game over Blackman Tuesday night to capture the Rutherford County championship.
The Chargers were behind 6-0 at halftime and 14-7 in the second half before rallying with two scores to capture the county title.
Trailing 14-7 early in the fourth, Oakland faced a fourth-and-7 situation at its own 20-yard line. Instead of punting, the Chargers ran fullback Brett Dobbs on a wheel route and he caught the pass from quarterback Tatum Marks for an 85-yard touchdown.
“It was the first we’ve trailed all year,” Oakland coach Scott Thomas said. “We called one of our special plays, and I think that changed the game.”
Dobbs, who scored Oakland’s first touchdown, also added the game-winner for the Chargers, who finished the season 8-0.
“We faced adversity for the first time and that’s something we talked about at halftime,” Thomas said. “Blackman had a great team, too, and we knew it was going to be a battle.
