The Murfreesboro Post has named its All-Rutherford County soccer team, compiled of players from Oakland, Blackman, Siegel, Smyrna, La Vergne and MTCS.

Several Rutherford teams enjoyed success in 2017, as Oakland and Siegel both qualified for the state tournament, while Smyrna won the District 9AAA tournament and qualified for the region tournament.

Oakland and Siegel gave fans two memorable postseason games, with Siegel winning the District 7AAA tournament and Oakland exacting revenge to claim the Region 4 championship. Both lost in the first round of the state tournament.  

The following are selections for the Murfreesboro Post All-County first and second teams, as well as Coach of the Year and players of the year:

Coach of the Year: Jeff Boynton, Oakland

Player of the Year: Janie Hopper, Siegel

Midfielder of the Year: Katie Nyland, Stewarts Creek

Defender of the Year: Katie Webb, Oakland

Goalkeeper of the Year: Elise Chessor, Blackman

All-County, First Team

Forward – Janie Hopper, Siegel

Hopper finished with 20 goals and 14 assists. She became the school’s all-time leader in goals with 68 and was named to the TSWA All-State team.

Forward – Ashley Barrientos, Smyrna

The 9AAA Offensive MVP finished with 26 goals and 12 assists, helping Smyrna win its first-ever district title.

Forward – Delaney Mitchell, Stewarts Creek

Mitchell had 20 goals and 11 assists for the prolific Lady Red Hawk offense.

Midfielder – Faith Adams, Oakland

Adams finished with four goals and eight assists for the Lady Pats, despite missing part of the season due to injury.

Midfielder – Kenzi Vetter, Blackman

Vetter scored four goals and five assists for the Lady Blaze. She signed with Cumberland University earlier this year to continue her soccer career.

Midfielder – Katie Nyland, Stewarts Creek

Nyland, the District 7AAA Midfielder of the Year, recorded 13 goals and 12 assists for Stewarts Creek.

Midfielder – Emily Sanchez, Siegel

Sanchez finished with 16 goals and two assists for the Lady Stars, helping Siegel win the District 7AAA tournament and reach the state tournament.

Defender – Katie Webb, Oakland

Webb, the 7AAA Defensive Player of the Year, was the catalyst of an Oakland defense that surrendered just 0.88 goals per game, helping them reach the state tournament.

Defender – Sarah Williams, Siegel

Williams was the anchor of a stingy Siegel defense that surrendered just 1.28 goals per game and was named a member of the 7AAA All-District team.

Defender – Lauren Sanchez, Central Magnet

Sanchez, who was named to the TSWA All-State team, was the leader of a Central Magnet team that allowed just 1.4 goals per game.

Goalkeeper – Elise Chessor, Blackman

She had five clean sheets and was the anchor of a Blackman team that surrendered just 1.6 goals per game.
