District soccer rivals Oakland and Siegel battled to a 2-2 early-season draw at Ray Hughes Stadium Friday night.

Oakland is now 4-0-2, while Siegel is 1-1-3.

Oakland drew first iron as Braxton Robinson sent a ball to the foot of Brayden Wilson, who put it into the net and in the third minute to give the Patriots a 1-0 lead.

Siegel tied the score a few minutes later as senior Drew Sledge scored the first of his two goals of the match as he dribbled the ball that went off the keeper, who came out of the box to defend it. Sledge then went past him and banged it into the empty net.

Both teams fought for possession control, but Oakland had more chances but just could not put the ball in the back of the net.

“We should be finishing the balls that we are getting and that is frustrating,” Oakland coach Jeff Porter said. “Give credit to Siegel. They came ready to play and we did not. We are just not playing well right now.”

Later in the half, Robinson got another assist as he passed it to Anthony Carretta, who dribbled it near the goal and then put it home as the Patriots took a 2-1 lead into intermission.

Early in the second half, both teams had several chances to score, but the balls all shots were off the mark. In the 13th minute, Sledge got another breakaway and put it in the near post to tie the game at 2-2.

“I beat the defense and the goalkeeper and put the ball into the corner,” Sledge said of the game-tying goal.

Both teams battled for control of possession as the balls just kept going wide on both sides of the goal. Some went over the crossbar and neither team scored again, which resulted in the 2-2 draw.

“Sledge is our leading scorer as we tried to get the ball over the top and past their center back,” Siegel coach John Devalk said. “We made some adjustments at halftime to their pressure and we got the game-tying goal.”
