Christiana Middle shuts out Rock Springs 42-0

Christiana Middle School rolled to its third straight win Tuesday night, taking down the Rock Springs Knights 42-0.

Joseph Franklin shined for the Cougars (3-1), going for five total scores in the win, including two special teams touchdowns.

“(Franklin) is a special athlete. We have a lot of them on the roster,” Christiana head coach Michael Stevenson said. “Any are capable of having a great night but (Tuesday night) happened to be his night and he made the most of it.”

Franklin tallied all four touchdowns for the Cougars in the first half on the ground. His biggest highlight came on an uncovered punt return to bolster a 28-0 score at the break.

“(Offensive line coach Tim) Clardy does a great job with the kids up front and none of (Franklin’s) success would have come if it were not for his work on the offensive line,” Stevenson said.

Franklin tallied another punt return touchdown in the second half to give him five for the night, the eighth grader rushed for 204 yards on nine carries.

Quarterback Sam Smith and Gavin Deery got in on the scoring with a 20-yard connection to extend a 42-0 lead.

Defensively, the Cougars pitched their third straight shutout. The role of Christiana’s defense has been vital in their quest to return to the RCS Championship since 2017.

“We had a gut check in our first week,” Stevenson said of their 62-12 loss to  league-leader Oakland. “We have grown up since then and playing better on that side of the ball. This week we focus on Rockvale to stay in the hunt.”

The Cougars play for a share of second place when they matchup with the Ravens on September 17th at Riverdale High School.
