Blackman volleyball sweeps Rockvale, stays unbeaten in district play

Blackman's volleyball team went on the road and earned a district win in a 3-0 sweep (25-13, 25-9, 25-20) over the Rockvale Rockets Tuesday.

"They did fine. We tried some different combinations and lineups tonight,"  Blackman coach Maddie Young said. "It was good to see Rockvale"

With the win, Blackman moved to 10-2 overall and 4-0 in district play. Rockvale dropped to 4-6 overall and 1-3 in district play.

"I was proud of them for coming back after the first two sets and challenging Blackman in that third set," Rockvale coach Falon Catalano stated after the match.

In the first game, Blackman jumped out to leads of 10-4 and 16-7. The Blaze's biggest lead was 23-13 before they closed it out at 25-13.

In the second game, it was again dominated by Blackman as it grabbed leads of 12-2, and the Blaze's biggest lead was 22-4. Rockvale's Tonie Davis served the Rockets five straight points to make it a 22-9 game before Blackman scored the final three points in rally to win 25-9.

The third game was a lot tighter as the Rockets were more competitive and led throughout the first half of the set by scores of 3-0, 4-1, and 8-5 before Blackman rallied to cut the lead to 11-10, forcing a timeout by Catalano and Rockvale.

The third set featured three ties and Blackman didn't get its first lead until 14-13. After the third set was tied at 14-14, the Blaze rattled off five straight points to take a 19-14 lead. The closest the Rockets got was 22-19 after an ace, but Blackman held on to win the final set and the match 25-20.
