Blackman routs Siegel behind big nights from Knox, Otey

The No. 2-ranked and undefeated Blackman Blaze (5-0, 2-0) scored 35 unanswered in the second half en route to a 59-14 thumping of the Siegel Stars (1-4, 02) in region play Friday night at ‘The Inferno’.

“They (Siegel) came out and did some good stuff and gave us problems,” Blackman coach Kit Hartsfield said. “We had to go in at halftime and regroup and tried to stop hurting ourselves and make adjustments and just get settled into the game.”

The Blaze amassed almost 500 yards of offense while their defense held the Siegel offense to under 200 while forcing 5 turnovers. All this despite being called for 18 penalties.

“We had two touchdowns called back,” Hartsfield said. “It was a sloppy first half. We have to clean the penalties up or it will come back to bite us.”

The usual suspects were at play for Blackman in Trey Knox and Adonis Otey, who combined for 304 all-purpose yards and 5 touchdowns, including 147 on the ground for Knox. Sophomore quarterback Drew Beam, after throwing picks on his first two attempts, settled in and threw for 142 yards and 2 TD (to Knox and Otey).

However in the first half it was junior Jordan Brown who stole the show, accounting for all three of Blackman’s touchdowns and two turnovers.

“If I had to label Jordan I’d say he’s an athlete,” Hartsfield said. “He can play running back, receiver, linebacker, safety. He is just a great football player every Friday. A big time player.”

Brown opened the game’s scoring on Siegel’s second possession with a 40 yard interception return for a touchdown.

“I was reading the receivers like we practice,” Brown said. “We know we are a good team that can make plays, so I went for the ball. It’s the mentality you have to have to play out here with these guys.”

The Stars answered immediately on a 17 yard strike from Tucker Sears to Evan Milligan to tie the game at 7 all.

Then, after having a 56 yarder called back on a holding penalty, Brown scored consecutively on runs of 2 and 43 to give Blackman a 21-7 advantage.

“I can’t thank God enough,” Brown said. “My O-line was amazing opening holes. I just wanted to do whatever I could to help the team tonight.”

The Stars came back with what would be their final score of the night, a 44 yard touchdown pass from Sears to Ethan VanHook.

Blackman added a field goal just before halftime, and then the aforementioned 35 in the second half

Siegel’s Patrick Boykins was able to reach the 100 yard mark, with 114 on 17 carries.

Both teams are in region action next week. Siegel plays host to Warren County while Blackman heads across town for a huge showdown with Oakland for tops in the region.
