To the Editor:

It’s not surprising that the fans of Islamophobia have been flamed in media outlets just as Americans reawaken to the grave injustices in our society.

Surviving a lockdown that instantaneously turned lives upside down to save humanity from an invisible virus has shown people that sudden, radical and complete changes might also be possible to eliminate those blights of our society on full display, such as racism, police brutality, endless wars and homelessness.

Those in power benefitting from the status quo “know the (Quranic) scripture as they know their own children” (Quran Chapter The Cow: Verse 146) and are perpetually afraid of Muslims undertaking their God-given duty to fight against their oppressive practices: “Stand out firmly for justice, as witnesses to God, even as against yourselves, or your parents, or your kin, and whether it be (against) rich or poor: for God can protect both." (Chapter The Women: Verse 135).

These oligarchs fund a multi-billion-dollar Islamophobia industry that pays politicians, academics, religious groups and journalists to spread lies that keep Muslims on the defensive and the public away from Islam and the solutions it offers.

But as America’s legendary activist Malcolm X, who was both Muslim and Black, advised shortly before his 1965 assassination: “America needs to understand Islam, because this is the one religion that erases from its society the race problem.”
