I Samuel 17:39 (NIV) “David fastened on his sword over the tunic and tried walking around, because he was not used to them. ‘I cannot go in these,’ he said to Saul, ‘because I am not used to them.’ So he took them off.”

The Believer should be aware that the systems of the world will always have a perspective on the things we do. Sight-based living depends on the predictable rhythms of science and order. “What comes up must come down.” “The fittest will survive.” “Seeing is believing.”

The sight-based mentality sees things as they are and responds.

This is the idea that Saul and his captains grappled with at the idea that a young lad, fresh from the pasture, would dare confront the blustering giant Goliath of Gath. Goliath standing at over nine feet tall and David at barely five feet tall surely needs the king’s equipment. David has a height disadvantage. David has a weight disadvantage. David has a strength disadvantage. David has an experience disadvantage. So, with good intentions, Saul prescribes his tunic, shield, and spear. Yet, there is a major problem –- they do not fit!

Are we trying to use the world’s equipment for battles God has called us to fight? The world will entice us to retaliate against those persons who have hurt us. The world will encourage an attitude of indifference or contempt to those who have forgotten us. (Matthew 5:38 “Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:”)

If we are not tuned into the leading of the Holy Spirit, we may be in the dressing room of carnality adopting attitudes, behaviors and mind-sets that totally ignore the One who gave us the mission. (Romans 8:1 “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.”)

We must have the faith to believe even against great odds, past failures, lingering doubts and blabbering giants that God is MORE than enough! (Romans 8:31 “What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?”) If you need “ammunition” for your current fight, here it is –- just remember what He’s already done! (I Samuel 17:36 “Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them …”)
