Temperatures will be in the 50s through the middle of the week but a strong cold front is expected on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day and could bring some showers and even some snowflakes.

Winter officially arrived last Monday at 4:02 a.m. I thought I would mention the coldest temperatures we have ever experienced in this area.

On Jan. 21, 1985, Woodbury in Cannon County dropped to 28-below zero, Smithville recorded 24 below, Lebanon had minus 20 and Nashville minus 17.

The coldest temperature ever observed in Tennessee was 32 below on Dec. 30, 1917, in Mountain City in the northeastern part of the state.

The United States record is 70 below in Rogers Pass, Mont., in 1954. The lowest temperature ever directly recorded at ground level is 129-below zero at the Soviet Vostok Station in Antarctica on July 21, 1983.
