Volunteers help pack boxes for last year’s PAL Youth and Families Christmas food box program. ANGIE MAYES

Rutherford County residents can make Christmas a little brighter by taking part in the Police Athletic League Youth and Families’ Christmas box packing and delivering day.

Volunteers should meet at the Smyrna Bowling Center, 95 Weakley Lane in Smyrna at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14. Volunteers and members of the Smyrna Fire Department will deliver the boxes. Delivering is not a requirement to volunteer.

Students can also get community service hours for their work. For students or families who wish to participate, contact Angie Mayes at angie@angiemayes.com with the names, number of volunteers and the name of the school.

The PAL Youth and Families is also hosting a fundraising drive to help pay for the items that go into the boxes. For $40, a family or company can sponsor a box. Each box has: turkey, flour, sugar, canned-goods, bread and desserts.

To donate, send a check to PAL Youth and Families, PO Box 905, La Vergne TN 37086.

“Each year, we serve upwards of 75 boxes for families and seniors in the La Vergne and Smyrna area,” PAL Youth and Families Executive Director Gerry Howse said. “We want to be a part of the community by giving back and helping those in need. We invite anyone to take part in this event, which will leave them with a full heart and the spirit of Christmas.”
