The Murfreesboro Police Department is investigating a shooting that took place around early Thursday at Greenland East Apartments. Police say this was the third time since May that victim Darnell Mayer “Deuce” Mayer (not pictured) survived a shooting; he also survived being hit by a car on June 11, police say.

A Murfreesboro man has survived his fourth apparent assassination attempt in as many months as police say he was shot multiple times early Thursday morning.

Darnell Mayer, aka “Deuce,” 49, of Murfreesboro, was found lying in front of Greenland East Apartments, 816 Greenland Drive, Murfreesboro Police Department public information officer Larry Flowers said in a press release. Police responded to reports of shots fired around 2:15 a.m.

Mayer was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, MPD said. Personnel with Rutherford County Emergency Medical Services, with assistance from Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department, began treating Mayer on scene. He was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center via Life Flight helicopter where he underwent surgery. He was listed in stable condition Thursday afternoon.

Detectives are looking for the alleged shooter and a dark colored sedan seen speeding away after the shooting.

This was Mayer’s latest brush with death.

Mayer was last shot multiple times on July 11 around 12:51 a.m. in the 700 block of Minor Street, the MPD said at the time.

A preliminary investigation from the July 11 shooting revealed Mayer approached a vehicle on Minor Street and spoke briefly with two occupants before one of them, inside the vehicle, allegedly started shooting, the MPD said.  Witnesses reported seeing a dark colored vehicle leaving the area.

Mayer was also the victim of a shooting on May 6, the MPD said then. He was shot at the corner of Minor Street and Hancock Street. The suspect fled the scene.

On June 11, Mayer suffered minor injuries after being struck by a vehicle while walking near Mercury Boulevard and Middle Tennessee Boulevard, the MPD said on July 11.

Mayer told police he believes someone was trying to kill him since he didn’t die in the May shooting, the MPD said.

Police have not given a motive for the incidents.
