Murfreesboro Police Department Chief Michael Bowen has announced the retirement of two officers who served the department for a combined 53 years.
A retirement ceremony was held last month at Murfreesboro Police Headquarters honoring Officer Deric Haynes and Officer James Smith.
Haynes begin with the department on Sept. 2, 1987, as a patrolman. He was chosen Officer of the Month in March 1991 and received the CrimeStoppers Public Service Award in June 1993.
“It was a pleasure working with everybody for the past 32 years,” Haynes said. “I’ve enjoyed it and I hope everyone enjoyed having me.”
Smith started working at the department on Nov. 25, 1996, as a patrolman. He was also a motorcycle officer and parks officer.
“It’s been a long ride and I’ve enjoyed it,” Smith said. “It was fun, and I want to thank Chief (Bowen) personally, especially for the last two years here.”
