TBI investigates fatal shooting by Smyrna Police officer

Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Special Agents are investigating the circumstances that led to a fatal officer-involved shooting Friday night around 8 p.m. in the 100 block of Chestnut Street in Smyrna.

District Attorney General Jennings Jones requested the investigation.

Preliminary information indicates officers with the Smyrna Police Department responded to a domestic disturbance call at this address, the TBI said. A male individual at the home was reported to have fired a weapon inside the home, and another resident was barricaded inside another room. Reports from the scene indicate that when the officer entered the home, the male subject fired at the officer, the TBI said. The officer fired at the man, striking him. That individual was transported to a local hospital, where he has been pronounced dead. The identity of this man is being withheld until relatives have been notified. No officers were injured.

This remains an active and ongoing investigation, as TBI Special Agents continue to work to gather any and all relevant interviews and evidence.
