Smyrna Officer Kevin Byers has been cleared in a fatal June 28 shooting at a Chestnut Street house.

Officers with the Smyrna Police Department responded to 115 Chestnut St. around 7:58 p.m. on a reported domestic situation, the department said in a press release.

Dispatch had received a call that the resident, William Lamb, had allegedly shot at his wife twice, SPD said. Upon their arrival, Byers and Officer Robert Cash entered the home. Byers made contact with Lamb in the hallway, identified himself as an officer and repeatedly yelled for Lamb to drop his weapon.

Lamb allegedly shot at Byers, missing him by approximately a foot, SPD said. Byers returned fire, striking Lamb three times.

Officers began to render first aid, SPD said. Lamb was transported to Stonecrest Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation conducted an investigation. District Attorney Jennings Jones officially cleared Byers of any criminal wrongdoing. The Smyrna Police Department has cleared Officers Byers and Officer Cash of any violation of policy.
