Second Amendment Sanctuary

Members of the audience stand and applaud Wednesday after the Rutherford County Commission approves a resolution declaring the county to be a Second Amendment Sanctuary.

The Rutherford County Commission on Thursday voted unanimously to declare the county as a Second Amendment Sanctuary.

The 21-0 decision came on a voice vote.

Commissioner Pettus Reed was the sponsor of the symbolic measure.

Four citizens spoke in favor of the resolution and said they had gathered a petition with about 1,000 signatures.

One of those speakers was Lynne Davis, who said she disagreed with critics who claim the measure is useless because it is a resolution, not a law.

“I disagree,” she said. “We realize this has no legal standing,’ and said the nation had “gone so far astray from what our Founding Fathers fought and died for.”
