Arthritis support group forming in Murfreesboro

A newly formed arthritis support group in Murfreesboro will hold its first-ever monthly meeting later this month.

Diana O’Daniel, the Arthritis Support Network leader for the new group, has lived with rheumatoid arthritis for more than 25 years. She says the group will provide help and support to adults whose lives are impacted by all types of arthritis, rheumatic and related conditions.

“The group will engage in fun activities together as well as learning about healthy lifestyle options and listening occasionally to speakers on related topics,” O’Daniel said. “I have felt the need to be a part of providing this support group in our community for some time as I know of many people who are battling with one or more of the 120 forms of arthritis and others who need to understand more about these debilitating conditions.”

She added the group is open to spouses and significant others, adult children, parents, friends or caregivers as they are also impacted by the conditions.

“As it turns out, I am happy to share that we are the first Arthritis Support Network group to form in the state of Tennessee,” O’Daniel added.

According to Haydee Sedlmeier, the Arthritis Support Network is “not about sitting around in circles, drinking stale coffee and crying, ‘Woe is me.’”

“Our peer-led, local support network offers connection, education and empowerment and shares a common goal of bringing people together for activities focused on mutual support and positive coping strategies for living well,” Sedlmeier said.

Among the planned activities are a potluck picnic, wine tasting, beginners’ tai chi class and many others.

The newly formed group will hold its inaugural meeting on Saturday, June 30, at 1 p.m. at the Church of the Holy Cross, 1140 Cason Lane, Murfreesboro. To learn more, contact O’Daniel at Diana@arthritisintrospective.org.
