The Murfreesboro City Council unanimously approved last Thursday the $155,354 purchase of water and sewer line materials to make updates along five city streets.

Assistant City Manager Darren Gore presented the project that aims to make improvements along Leaf, Harrison, Rose and Clover avenues in addition to Boston Street.

Southern Pipe and Supply was the lowest of six total bidders. The project will replace the existing lines with new, eight-inch PVC pipes.

Gore presented a request to amend the FY-22 budget to eliminate the Water and Sewer Department’s full-time Effective Utility Management Coordinator position. Instead, he asked to modify the position so that it would be part-time and contractual.

Steve Tate, who currently holds the position, has announced his retirement.

Gore said the department would benefit from the role a few days out of the week. The change would result in an approximate 50% cost-savings.

The council unanimously approved the request.

Mayor Shane McFarland also recognized city Human Resources Director Pam Russell, who left the position last Friday.

“I wanted to say thank you, Pam, for serving the residents and the employees of Murfreesboro so ably, and we wish you nothing but the best on your new position and your future endeavors with your family,” said McFarland.

Russell was promoted to the director’s position in 2017 after working for the city for a total of seven years.

The next City Council meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 4.
