Nearly $271 million in road projects are planned in Murfreesboro over the next four years, city officials say.

During a City Council workshop meeting Wednesday, staff presented council members with an update on approximately $270.5 million in road construction plans through 2023. Nearly half of the money (approximately $123 million will come from the state; the rest will be local and federal money).

The projects include:

  • Brinkley Road: total cost of $13.6 million to rebuild two miles to three lanes. Planning is being done for right of way. Construction should start in 2021.
  • Cherry Lane Phase II: Total cost of $16.8 million, all from local funds, to build a five-lane road from the west end of Siegel Park to Sulphur Springs Road. Right-of-way is being bought, and construction should start in 2021.
  • Cherry Lane Phase III: Total cost of $53.75 million, including $46.7 million in local funds, to build a five-lane road and interchange in two phases to the east and west of Interstate 840. Right-of-way is being acquired, and construction should start in 2021.
  • Gateway Boulevard extension: Total cost of $2.45 million in local funding to build a three-lane road between Robert Rose Drive and Gateway Boulevard. Preliminary design is being conducted, and work should start in 2022.
  • Jones Boulevard: Total cost of $9.1 million in local funds to improve road to a three-lane road with curb and gutters, plus a multi-use path and sidewalk. Right-of-way is being bought, and work should start this year.
  • New Salem Phase I: Total cost of $13.6 million, including $302,600 in local funds, to rebuild highway from Interstate 24 with five lanes and sidewalks. Length is 1.35 miles. Construction will start in 2021.
  • New Salem Phase II: Total cost of $32.9 million, including $68,000 in local funds, to rebuild 2.15 miles of the highway from I-24 to Cason Lane. It is under construction.
  • New Salem Phase III: Total cost of $23.3 million, all from state funding, to reconstruct 2.46 miles of the highway from Cason Lane to Veterans Parkway with five lanes and sidewalks. Construction will start in 2023.
  • Rucker Lane: Total cost of $14.5 million in local funding to rebuild road from State Route 96 to Veterans Parkway to a three-lane road in 2.4 miles with sidewalks. Construction will start this year.
  • Rutherford Boulevard extension: Total cost of $23.5 million in local funding to extend road with three lanes with bridge over I-24 from Rutherford Boulevard to Warrior Drive, with improvements to Rutledge Drive. Construction will start in 2023.
  • Rutherford Boulevard signal improvements: Total cost of nearly $3.5 million to use 15 adaptive signal control technology traffic signals. Work will start this year.
  • Thompson Lane widening: Total cost of $58.5 million to widen 4.25 miles of road to create five lanes and sidewalks. Right-of-way is being acquired, and construction will start in 2023.
  • Warrior Drive extension: Total cost of $5 million, including $3 million in local funds, to complete a loop with Beasie Road, including the intersection at Warrior Drive and New Salem Highway.
