McFadden School of Excellence in Murfreesboro has been named the top-ranked elementary school in Tennessee by U.S. News & World Report, according to a news release from Rutherford County Schools.

The magazine has McFadden ranked No. 1 in math proficiency and tied for No. 1 in reading proficiency in its first “Best K-8 Schools” list.

“It’s never our goal,” Principal Dr. Clark Blair said in the news release. “We don’t ever talk about trying to be No. 1 in anything. I talked about it today in our announcements, ‘Just be the best you can be today.’ ”

According to RCS, 98 percent of the McFadden students scored at or above the proficiency levels for math and 92 percent scored at or above the level for reading.

Thurman was No. 53 on the list and Lascassas Elementary was at No. 85.
