A Hartsville man died in an accident on Interstate 24 on Friday, Oct. 9.
A tractor-trailer hauling cattle crashed and burned on the westbound side of I-24 Mile Marker 72 around 5:45 p.m., the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office said. The accident was between Interstate 840 and Almaville Road.
Deputies corralled cattle that were in a field and helped direct traffic, the RCSO said.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol issued a preliminary accident report. A commercial motor vehicle driven by Jonathan Walker, 43, of Hartsville was traveling in Lane 3 on I-24 prior to the accident. A 2008 Honda Accord driven by a 17-year-old from Murfreesboro was driving in Lane 2.
The Honda’s driver allegedly attempted to merge right at the same time as another vehicle and over-corrected, spinning out of control and striking the cable barrier before spinning in front of Walker’s vehicle, the THP said. Both vehicles came to a rest on the right shoulder of the road in the tree line.
The 17-year-old driver was injured, the THP said. The patrol did not release additional details about the driver due to that person’s age.
Responding agencies also included the Rutherford County Emergency Medical Service, Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department and Rutherford County Emergency Management Agency, according to the sheriff’s office.
