Acknowledging the department difficulties of the past few years, Bill West anticipates using his years of law enforcement experience and his respect and admiration for the Sheriff’s Office family to lead the Sheriff’s Office in a new direction for the future.

A 34-year veteran of the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office, Bill has achieved success in various law enforcement positions. Joining the department as a patrol officer in 1984, Bill moved up to Criminal Investigations, Narcotics Division and was one of the founding members of the local SWAT team. His passion since 1993 has been to the School Resource Officer Unit.

“I have had the honor of working alongside many dedicated administrators, teachers and coaches. I have supported and counseled families and children and have been blessed to watch many students grow into successful, contributing members of the community,” West said. “It is my desire to promote teamwork with all divisions and deputies of the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office, Rutherford County Schools and other government agencies to guarantee that all citizens in our county are well protected.”

As an SRO, Bill has served with distinction beginning with a nine-year assignment to Central Middle School. In 2002 he was promoted to Lieutenant in the SRO Division as a Field Supervisor and has cultivated the growth and management of the SRO program. He is an active member of the National Association of School Resource Officers and has been appointed and elected to numerous leadership and governing positions. He joined the Board of Directors in 2008 and will assume the role of NASRO President in the summer of 2018. His current school assignment is with Brown’s Chapel Elementary and he serves as supervisor to a team of Rutherford County SRO’s. For the past 12 years, Bill has also proudly helped coordinate the SRO Special Needs Kids Rodeo, an annual public event drawing thousands of fans. The rodeo, also featuring a special school day, has hosted as many as 800 special needs children to a private rodeo showing, horseback and pony rides, lunch, photos and more.

Bill believes that his long career and commitment to the community he serves has prepared him to hold the Office of Sheriff.

“I pledge to work hard and be a good steward of taxpayer money,” West said, “Our office is for all our citizens young and old. Our county has grown dramatically and whether you were born here or moved here for better opportunities, we are all members of Rutherford County and we are all in this life together.”

Both graduates of MTSU, Bill and his wife of 32 years, Lynn, have three children and currently live in the Blackman community. They are longtime, active members of Trinity United Methodist Church.

“Bill has dreamed of serving as Rutherford County Sheriff for a long time,” Lynn said, “Our family wholeheartedly supports his commitment to public service and we humbly ask that you support this commitment with your vote on August 2.”
