Five MTSU connections nominated for Grammy Awards




Five songwriters, engineers and singers who studied at Middle Tennessee State University have been nominated for Grammy Awards.

The nominees’ list includes: music business alumnus Rob Williford, Master of Fine Arts and Recording Technologies alumnus Aaron Raitiere, recording industry graduate Brandon Bell, recording industry grad Tony Castle and former student Hillary Scott with the band Lady A.

Raitiere, Bell, Castle and Scott have previously won Grammy Awards.

Williford is the songwriting partner of reigning two-time CMA Entertainer of the Year Luke Combs, who’s nominated as a co-writer for best country song for the platinum-selling “Doin’ This.”

Raitiere is a songwriter and singer on Ashley McBryde’s best country album nominee, “Ashley McBryde Presents: Lindeville.”

Bell’s mixing work on Brandi Carlile’s “In These Silent Days” earned him multiple nominations, including album of the year and best Americana album, and record of the year for “You and Me on The Rock.”

Castle is nominated for engineering icon Willie Nelson’s newest country album, “A Beautiful Time.”

Scott is nominated for best contemporary Christian music performance with the sibling duo for KING & COUNTRY’s “For God is With Us.”

The 2023 Grammys will be broadcast Sunday, Feb. 5, from 7-10:30 p.m. on CBS from the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.

MTSU alumni, former or current students, and have been a part of more than 134 Grammy Award nominations in the last two decades. The number of MTSU-connected Grammy winners since 2001 stands at 15 people with a total of 37 Grammys.

MTSU plans to take a group of College of Media and Entertainment students, faculty and administrators to Los Angeles for alumni events and to attend backstage and pre-show Grammy events.
