La Vergne police say a convicted felon was taken to the hospital Tuesday afternoon after fighting officers during a traffic stop.
An officer initiated a traffic stop with the suspect around 3:30 p.m. at Floyd Mayfield Drive and Patty Cove, according to a City of La Vergne press release. The suspect immediately exited the vehicle after pulling over and allegedly became combative with officers, the city said. After a brief fight, the suspect was taken into custody and transported to TriStar StoneCrest Medical Center to be evaluated. Officers were treated on the scene for minor injuries.
In the vehicle, officers reporting finding an altered weapon and ammunition as well as illegal narcotics, including suspected gray heroin, the city said.
Police identified the suspect as Ricky Whitlow, 36. He was booked at the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office on possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, resisting arrest, possession of schedule I drugs, possession of schedule II drugs and possession of schedule VI drugs. Whitlow is a convicted felon in Rutherford, Davidson and Wilson counties on charges including manslaughter, aggravated robbery and theft, the city said.
