The Exchange Club of Murfreesboro has named Andrew Carter as the FireFighter / Advanced EMT of the Year.

Last May Carter returned to home base – Station 9 on Cason Lane — after filling in at another station. The crew had left for an assignment, so he started cleaning up. Suddenly a father arrived at the station with a 1-year-old who was having breathing issues.

Carter, a Nationally Certified Advanced EMT, started CPR and breathing techniques on the child and called EMS. By the time EMS had arrived, the child had started breathing on his own.

Deputy Fire Chief Roger Toombs said that with Carter being the father of young child, he probably had some tough emotions in dealing with the situation.
