Murfreesboro attorney Jo Atwood has become the first female Circuit Court Judge in the 16th Judicial District following her appointment last week by Gov. Bill Lee.

The 16th Judicial District covers Rutherford and Cannon counties. The vacancy was created when the Hon. Royce Taylor retired in March.

“Bonita Jo Atwood is an experienced litigator with the right temperament to serve on the bench,” Lee said in a news release. “I’m proud to nominate her for the Circuit Court and thank her for her willingness to serve the people of Tennessee.”

Atwood has served as a managing partner at Atwood and Moore since 1995, representing more than 7,000 clients in a wide scope of civil litigation. She is a charter member of the Middle Tennessee Lawyers Association for Women.

Earlier this year Atwood announced that she is a candidate for the permanent position. Lee’s appointment does not change her status on the ballot.
