The American Red Cross plans to honor four of Rutherford County’s more prolific blood donors on Tuesday, Nov. 2 during Middle Tennessee State University’s on-campus “True Blue Blood Drive.”

The donors are Edwin Alexander, who has donated 494 units; Edward Baker, who has donated 410 units; Billy Jones, who has donated 404 units; and Andrea Jones, an MTSU employee and Billy Jones’ wife who has donated 101 units.

All four donors are also MTSU alumni.

The three-day blood drive began Monday, Nov. 1 and continues through Wednesday, Nov. 3, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day at the MTSU Rec Center, 1848 Blue Raider Dr. Walk-in donors will be welcomed.

Alexander began donating blood and platelets at 17 years old. His father was a regular blood and platelet donor and passed on the importance of saving lives through blood donation to his son.

Baker began donating blood at the Heart of Tennessee Chapter of the Red Cross Donation Center in Murfreesboro. He said he never misses an MTSU football home game.

Billy Jones began donating blood and platelets about 15 years ago after his mother-in-law was diagnosed with kidney cancer.

The annual blood drive is continuing a 12-year tradition of a three-day fall blood collection effort, launched in 2010 as a friendly competition with football rival Western Kentucky University.

That competition has seen MTSU and Western supporters together donate 9,800 total units of blood and platelets.
