Mary Ellen Vaughn moved to Murfreesboro as a young woman and became a force in the local civil rights movement. She established the African American newspaper “Murfreesboro Union” in 1920 and worked as a nurse to improve public health in rural parts of Rutherford County. Murfreesboro’s Vaughn Street was named in her honor. About 30 people attended the unveiling of the Vaughn historical marker, including friends of Vaughn.
