Eight Marine recruits were sworn into the military during Smyrna’s Veteran Day ceremony on Nov. 11 at at the Capt. Jeff Kuss, USMC Memorial in Lee Victory Park. 

The Town of Smyrna Fire Department Honor Guard presented the colors. 

Smyrna Town Manager Brian Hercules was the master of ceremonies. Chaplain Lou Hamilton gave the invocation, and the Stewarts Creek High School Chorale sang “The Star Spangled Banner.” 

Army veteran Darrell Birk, the commander of Smyrna Post 8422 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, said “Veterans Day is a day for camaraderie … today’s a day for celebrating our veterans, the young, the old, and the future generation.” 

Marine Sgt. Louis Jablonski presented the oath of enlistment to the recruits, followed with the presentation of “America the Beautiful” by the Stewarts Creek High School Brass Choir.

The eight recruits are: Mark Thompson; Zachary Marchese; Frederick Cosby; Thomas Holland; Shane Renk; Deandre Johnson; Bryson Reiter; and Austin Chambers.

The keynote speaker was Stewarts Creek High School Executive Principal Dr. Clark Harrell. He is a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel and chaplain. 

“At this moment, men and women of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard are serving around the world,” Harrell said. “They represent our resolve, our resolute dedication, to achieving a lasting peace out of the challenges and, yes, threats of the 21st century.”

At the end of the ceremony, a wreath was placed at the Kuss Memorial, presented by VFW Commander Darrell Birk and escorted by the Smyrna Town Council.
