Brianna Mason, a Hobgood Elementary School first-grade teacher, on Saturday became the first black woman to be crowned as Miss Tennessee.

Hobgood Elementary School first-grade teacher Brianna Mason made history Saturday when she became the first black woman to be crowned Miss Tennessee.

Murfreesboro City Schools said Mason’s crowning was a first.

“Congratulations Brianna Mason, 1st grade teacher at Hobgood Elementary on being crowned Miss Tennessee tonight,” MCS said in a statement Saturday. “There are a bunch of excited principals and teachers in Murfreesboro tonight. She made history and we are so proud!”

Dr. Linda Gilbert, MCS superintendent, tweeted, “What a fantastic representative of the most important profession in the world—teaching!”
