Community MATTERS

Are you looking for useful ways to volunteer?

Are you looking for useful ways to volunteer? Do you want to invest in your community, but are unsure where your donations will do the most good? Would you like to know more about the services non-profit organizations in your community provide? Read on to discover how you can make a difference in Rutherford County.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY | rchfh.org | (615) 890-5877 | 850 Mercury Blvd.Celebrating 25 years in Middle Tennessee, Rutherford County Habitat for Humanity (RCHFH) has built 127 homes. Habitat builds safe and affordable housing for low-income families in need. They serve families who often live in overcrowded, unsafe, dilapidated housing and spend $800 – $1000 a month for that substandard housing. In fact, a minimum wage earner in Rutherford County has to work 76 hours a week, 52 weeks a year to earn the Fair Market Value of housing in the county. Through the Habitat program, mortgages average $380 a month, giving a family immediate added income to cover monthly costs. Habitat for Humanity does not give away houses! Partner families BUY their homes through our 0-interest mortgages, at no profit to Habitat.

The Habitat for Humanity program includes a mandatory 30-week Financial and Homeowner Education program that helps Habitat homeowners manage their money, lower their debt-income ratio, make sound financial decisions and get off of government services and permanently out of the cycle of poverty. Habitat families also commit to the program by completing 300-400 hours of “sweat equity”.

Habitat funds all of their house builds through local donations, grants, events and corporate sponsorships. Each Habitat house costs $60,000-90,000, not including land, and takes an average of 180 community volunteers to build. Donations to RCHFH can also be made through employee giving, stock and asset gifts, and planned giving.

RCHFH also manages the Habitat ReStore, which provides the funds for the administrative costs of RCHFH so all donations can go towards building housing for families in need. The Habitat ReStore sells both donated and new items such as appliances, building materials, doors and windows, bath and kitchen items, cabinets, furniture, flooring, lighting and household accessories. The ReStore keeps an estimated 267 tons of materials out of local landfills every year.

Habitat for Humanity strives to make permanent change – to give good, hard-working people a hand up, not a hand-out – a way to get out of poverty and become responsible and financially grounded citizens and neighbors.
