MTSU Asian donation

MTSU student Sophia Luangrath receives a check on behalf of the MTSU Asian Student Association from Bounthanh Chanthalasy of the Wat Lao Buddharam at the Lao New Year Celebration held May 25 at the Buddhist temple.

MTSU’s Asian Student Association recently received a donation from a Murfreesboro Buddhist temple to support the campus organization’s efforts to celebrate and raise awareness about Asian culture.

The Wat Lao Buddharam temple donated $6,000 to the student group during the recent Lao New Year celebration, which falls on Memorial Day weekend every year. Organizers say this year’s three-day event drew a record-breaking 10,000-plus attendees from around the region and country to the temple on Old Nashville Highway.

Temple representatives presented a $5,500 gift to the ASA in support of its activities for the coming year and also presented an additional gift of $500 for the 35 student volunteers provided for the event.

Sophia Luangrath, an MTSU junior and president of the Asian Student Association, has already begun planning many activities for the Asian Student Association. Among her goals is hosting the regional Asian American and Pacific Islander student conference at MTSU for the first time.
