NEW ORLEANS – Senior Desmond Yates has been named Sun Belt Player of the Week as announced by the league office on Monday after an impressive week which included two wins over rival Western Kentucky.
Yates became the all-time leading scorer at Middle Tennessee after scoring 28 points against the Hilltoppers as the Blue Raiders took over the top spot in the East Division of the Sun Belt Conference on Saturday afternoon.
“Obviously it was a great week for our team. We improved considerably and it was a special week for Boogie. To be the all-time leading scorer, help our team win three big league games and on top of that be named Player of the Week and I think Boogie will say the most important stat is that we won three league games. Congratulations to Boogie,” head coach Kermit Davis said.
The Somerville, Tenn., native guided the Blue Raiders throughout the week taking wins over Western Kentucky and ULM before the record breaking performance on ESPN 2.
Needing just 22 points to claim the scoring title going into Saturday's game, Yates scored 13 in the first half. A layup by Yates after a pass from senior Calvin O'Neil made him the all-time leading scorer at Middle Tennessee and extended the Blue Raider lead to nine with 1:07 to play.
He now has 1,629 points in his career passing Robert Taylor who scored 1,622 during his career (1989-93) at Middle Tennessee.
Yates scored in double figures in each of the three games last week posting 14 in the first meeting with Western Kentucky and 16 points against the Warhawks.
In three games, Yates shot 66.7 percent from behind the arc and missed just three of his 17 free throw opportunities. He also performed well on defense pulling down seven rebounds in the first Western Kentucky game and five rebounds against ULM.
The Blue Raiders return to Murphy Center this week playing host to New Orleans and North Texas to begin a three game home stand. The Blue Raiders first play host to New Orleans on Thursday, Jan. 28 at 7 p.m.
