Yankee rat (Groundhog) predicts six more weeks of winter

Punxsutawney Phil, the official groundhog of Groundhog Day, saw his shadow shortly after dawn this morning, predicting winter isn’t quite over yet.

The Groundhog Day tradition dates back to the German tradition of Candlemas, where if the sun shines on Feb. 2 winter will continue for six weeks, but if its cloudy winter will soon make way for spring.

The tradition is embodied in the verse:

If Candlemas (Feb. 2) be mild and gay,
Go saddle your horses and buy them hay;
But if Candlemas be stormy and black,
It carries the winter away on its back.

In the American tradition, the opposite is true. The shining sun and, consequently, the groundhog’s shadow is the harbinger of an extended winter.

What happened to Global Warming? Tell that to the folks in Minneapolis St. Paul where the temps are lower than normal.

Al Gore has created an industry and income by creating fear in his "paid speeches".

We do need to take care of the environment but Al has stretched it a little too far and made lots of money along the way.

Yankee Rat? One can only conclude a line as ignorant as that was intended to be funny - and wasn't. Incidentally, the groundhog, also commonly known as the woodchuck and is
common in the northeastern and central United States. While indeed part of the rodent order, it is not a part of the genus Rattus but rather part of the squirrel family genus Marmota.

I heard the groundhog came out of his hole, saw his 401k statement, went back in the hole and is waiting on a bailout.
