Work on Bradyville to start next week

The wet weather has delayed much-needed improvements to Bradyville Pike to make the road safer for motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists, a Tennessee Department of Transportation official said.

“It's difficult to pave in the rain, and it must be dry to apply the new striping,” explained B.J. Doughty, TDOT’s spokeswoman. “So, the contractor is playing it day by day and waiting on enough dry weather to work.”

When the weather clears up the improvements will take about a week to complete, she said, adding the construction will likely start beginning next week.

Drivers can expect daytime closures with a reduced speed limit and flaggers on hand to direct traffic.

Community concerns about the safety of the two-lane road arose after the death of a young girl after she was struck by a Rutherford County Sheriff detective’s patrol car last summer.

Following the accident, Murfreesboro Planning staff worked with Tennessee Department of Transportation to complete a safety study of Bradyville Pike between Middle Tennessee and Rutherford boulevards.

“We do these road safety reviews because motorist safety is TDOT’s No. 1 priority,” Doughty said in a previous interview. “They often find small improvements to make a road safer.”

Which is the case with Bradyville Pike.

The study suggested repaving the road between Middle Tennessee and Minerva, adding 4-foot, paved shoulders for pedestrian and bicycle use, and replacing all traffic-control signs, traffic lights and stop lines on side roads.

The improvements are needed because the study found the stretch of road has a crash rate almost double what the state allows.

During the study period of January 2005 to July 2008, 68 wrecks occurred with two fatalities, one serious injury and 28 minor injury crashes.

Because of the high rate of crashes, the road qualifies for a federal program to increase road safety and accompanying federal funds to pay for the improvements.

I just rode through there this afternoon(fri),and it is much better!
I passed a diabled gentleman on his scooter,he had plenty of room and I didn't have to swerve over into the other lane to avoid him.
Good job TDOT.

Too bad it took a tragic accident to make this happen. It should have been done along time ago.
